What a cookie is
A cookie is any type of file or device that is downloaded onto a user's terminal equipment in order to store data that may be updated and retrieved by the entity responsible for its installation.
Its main functions are to keep track of users, to obtain information about the user's browsing habits and to prevent intrusion attempts through spyware.
Types of cookies
The main types of cookies are the following:
1.- According to who manages them:
- First-party: those sent to the user's terminal from equipment or a domain managed by the publisher or controller of the website itself, from which the service requested by the user is provided.
- Third-party: those sent to the user's terminal equipment from equipment or a domain that is not managed by the publisher or controller of the website, but by another entity that processes the data obtained through the cookies.
2.- According to how long they remain active:
- Session: a type of cookie designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a web page.
- Persistent: a type of cookie in which the data remains stored on the terminal and can be accessed and processed for a period defined by the party responsible for the cookie, which may range from a few minutes to several years.
3.- According to their purpose:
- Strictly necessary cookies: those that allow the user to browse a website, platform or application and to use the different options or services available on it, such as controlling traffic and data communication, identifying the session, accessing restricted-access areas, remembering the items making up an order, carrying out the purchase process for an order, using security features while browsing, storing content for the broadcast of video or audio, or sharing content through social networks.
- Personalisation cookies: those that allow the user to access the service with certain general characteristics predefined on the basis of a series of criteria on the user's terminal, such as the language, the type of browser through which the service is accessed, the regional settings from which the service is accessed, etc.
- Analytics: those that allow the party responsible for them to monitor and analyse the behaviour of the users of the websites to which they are linked. The information collected through this type of cookie is used to measure the activity of the websites, application or platform and to build browsing profiles of the users of those sites, applications and platforms, in order to introduce improvements based on the analysis of the usage data of the users of the service.
- Advertising: those that allow the most effective possible management of the advertising space that the publisher may have included on a web page, application or platform from which the requested service is provided, on the basis of criteria such as the content edited or the frequency with which the advertisements are displayed.
- Behavioural advertising: those that allow the most effective possible management of the advertising space that the publisher or controller of the website may have included on a web page, application or platform from which the requested service is provided.
These cookies store information on user behaviour obtained through the continuous observation of their browsing habits, which makes it possible to develop a specific profile in order to display advertising based on it.
